Questionnaire
I'm going to post this to a couple of communities but I thought I'd do a test one here in case anyone is passing. I have my very last essay of second year to do and quite frustratingly it has a questionnaire component, annoying when one is on maternity leave and doesn't have access to the classmates that everyone else does! So...I picked LJ as my website to look at, thinking that at least I have access to a community of people here and have composed the following questionnaire.

It is tres pants, my lecturer in psychological testing would be embarassed to have taught me, but at this stage with a 3 year old and a 6 month old and a husband with many deadlines it is simply a case of getting it done asap. 'Tis a pilot anyway with the intent that it would be refined later if the subject was followed up.

So, see below if you fancy replying to it for me, I'd be most grateful. You can either simply cut and paste into a comment with the answers or if you want it to be private then feel free to cut and paste it into an email and send it to my uni account: lcook@cis.strath.ac.uk

Yes

If yes, which ones?

Myspace

How long have you had an active LiveJournal account for? Since 2001

What level of user would you describe yourself as?
Novice

Expert

Do you use a downloadable client as your LJ interface?
Yes Why?
- I've used the Semagic client for maintenance and posting because of the expanded interface and options, and the history is much more convenient for finding a specific entry and cleaning out old entries with overhauls (which I like to do often) because otherwise, it takes forever to delete them all manually. I don't always use it, though, and haven't been recently mostly because I forget to.

Do you have accounts with any social networking sites (e.g. Facebook, MySpace, Bebo)?
(Yes)
No

If yes, which ones?
- Myspace for no particular reason (actually, because someone demanded I did, so I did) and a few others for business advertising reasons that I don't manage anymore.

For each, would you say they are easier to use than LJ?
- Absolutely not. Myspace makes me cringe.

What are your favourite features of LJ?
- The convenience of layout and functions being simple enough to not have to necessarily "learn" how to use it if you're heart just isn't in it.

What are your least favourite features of LJ?
- Clunky and not very well suited to fine manipulation and customization, even for people that know the code.

What improvements could be made to LJ to enhance the user experience?
- Slow servers, less clunky Community management and options.

Any other comments regarding the user experience of LiveJournal: The ease of being able to make a one-to-two-click post is a definite bonus, and adds to the amount of useless garbage and quips I can post at whim. Yay livejournal!

How long have you had an active LiveJournal account for?
3 years

What level of user would you describe yourself as?
Experienced

Do you use a downloadable client as your LJ interface?
No
Why Not?
I can't be bothered downloading it when the online one suffices for my needs.

Do you have accounts with any social networking sites (e.g. Facebook, MySpace, Bebo)?
Yes

If yes, which ones?
Facebook

For each, would you say they are easier to use than LJ?
Facebook - yes.

What are your favourite features of LJ?
Ease of use - you can jump right in with little experience and still make the thing work fairly well - however, other sites do it better.

What are your least favourite features of LJ?
The fact it is a journal - I can rarely have the time to update the thing.

What improvements could be made to LJ to enhance the user experience?
I found the customisation tools, while extemsive, were far from intuative, and were a little restrictive.

Any other comments regarding the user experience of LiveJournal:
Provide more social network management tools resolve the annoyingly slow servers.

How long have you had an active LiveJournal account for? Since April 2003

What level of user would you describe yourself as? Expert

Do you use a downloadable client as your LJ interface? Yes
Why? Habit now, When I started using it the LJ post client wasn't as fully featured.

Do you have accounts with any social networking sites (e.g. Facebook, MySpace, Bebo)? Yes

If yes, which ones? Facebook,

For each, would you say they are easier to use than LJ? Can't really compare them as I use the for different things.

What are your favourite features of LJ? The friends page.

What are your least favourite features of LJ? some of the people on it.

What improvements could be made to LJ to enhance the user experience? The ability to easily ignore a persons postings. (I think there's a way of doing it but it's complicated and my brain is small).

Okay, I was wrong about that friends page back to journal page thing. Did it used to be that way?

I think it depends on your settings. They do have "master" navigation bar at the top that you enable, I find it annoying so don't use it, YMMV.
